Behind the counter at bica café

More than just a café

In their early days of operation, Uptown 11 formed a strategic partnership with chefs Charlie Knowles and Manny Da Luz to build on the success of their neighborhood cafe, bica. We approached the chefs and said "we're starting a creative agency." Within days, they tapped us to start working by their sides to build a community at bica.

Early days

Uptown 11 built bica’s website from scratch, produced the original photography, videography and provided wrap-around consulting and advisory services to the owners as they built and grew their brand.

Maintaining momentum

Today, Uptown 11 Studios provides storytelling and creative services to bica in a model that’s wholly untraditional for a neighborhood restaurant, chronicling the ins and outs of life inside the café.

These days

bica regularly appears a top the lists of San Diego’s best restaurants and is frequented by the top chefs and service industry professionals in the region. We recently handed over design and management of bica's website to its in-house team, and its updates are built on the foundation established through our partnership.

Community recognition

Praise and proclamations
The bica community has been recognized for its efforts to build a supportive community environment through its events and day-to-day welcoming atmosphere. In 2024, it earned a proclamation from Council President Sean Elo Rivera and a special congressional recognition from Congresswoman Sara Jacobs.
Press and partnerships
The briliiant chefs and their delicious food are the subject of countless press clips throughout the year, maintaining its designation as one of the "hottest restaurants in San Diego" by Eater San Diego for more than 12 months running. In summer 2024, as the café celebrated its 1-year anniversary, we helped bica with a feature in Westways Magazine, which is distributed to more than 4 million readers in California.
Digital engagement
Over the course of a year, about 50,000 visitors come to bica's website, which is regularly updated with short features and new photography of the café's culture and its seasonally-rotating dishes. We helped bica grow its popular newsletter, through a 50/50 mix of online signups and handwritten names at the front counter. It averages a 63% open rate.
