For many people, the journey from soldier to civilian can be an unexpected last mission. One that can shape the trajectory of their lives. After years of structure, purpose and camaraderie, stepping back into civilian life can feel uncertain and isolating. Too often, veterans are left to navigate that transition alone, searching for direction, stability, and a sense of belonging after service. But this is not Yogi’s story.
As a first generation immigrant, serving 22 years in the Navy, Yogi wondered, what comes next after separating from the military. Fortunately, he did not have to answer that question alone.
Through the San Diego Community College District he found more than just a path forward he found a community ready to support him. More than a college, it became his foundation for growth, connection and belonging during one of the most pivotal moments of his life.
After becoming a student at the college, Yogi quickly became immersed in a support system that he knew was missing for many veterans like himself. His new mission was personal and fueled by the passion to help others like him find their community.
With his SDCC mentors by his side and his lived experience to guide him, Yogi became a beacon for veterans like himself, looking for a soft landing into civilian life. One that offers support, guidance and a sense of community.
What started as his transition, turned into a full circle moment of paying it forward.
Community can change the course of someone’s life, turning uncertainty into opportunity and isolation into connection. By sharing Yogi’s journey, we are not only honoring his service, we are reminded that while major transitions in life can feel like a free fall, support systems, like SDCC, are built for soft landings.
