Camera Exposure and Safelight Labs

case study

Developing a community around film photography

Picture-perfect partnership

When we first met with the owners of Safelight Labs and Camera Exposure, we instantly hit it off. After all, this is a used camera store and photo lab and we've been working for decades as photojournalists. We had a few things to chat about ...

Setting up shop inside a story factory

We pitched overhauling Safelight's website and adding an important feature: a news section that would tell stories about the San Diego community through the eyes of the photographers who develop their film at Safelight Labs. Thousands of people every year bring film to be processed, making Safelight a veritable story factory.

Laying a foundation for success

First, we had to do a revamp of Safelight's site, and also integrate the Camera Exposure and Safelight Labs brands into one. Camera Exposure has served the community as a camera shop for nearly 40 years, and Safelight was reintroducing itself to San Diego after shutting the doors to its prior space in Cortez Hill during the depths of the pandemic.

Developing Stories

We named the news section "Developing Stories," and instantly photographers were thrilled to have their work featured. It became the centerpiece of a community-building effort that also involved the opening of Safelight's community darkroom in early 2025.

A new storytelling platform

Filling a void
We're a more visual world than ever before, but the space to actually sit down and deconstruct a photographer's work and their intentions is growing slimmer by the day. We saw an opportunity to fill a community need by telling stories about San Diego through the eyes of local photographers who develop their work at Safelight Labs.
Igniting a community
By featuring the photographers' work, we're directly engaging and elevating Safelight's core audience, while simultaneously creating an avenue for new admirers and customers to become acquainted with Safelight's brand through the work of its existing community.
Keeping on track
We manage Developing Stories with a dedicated reporter covering the beat and keep the team updated using sophisticated project management tools. We coordinate everything with Safelight's social media team so that we share the product seamlessly to the public.
Real people. Real stories. Real results.
