Alive in Memory: Día de Muertos in Barrio Logan

A Celebration Rooted in Community

In Barrio Logan, Día de Muertos is more than a celebration; it’s a homecoming. Each year, the neighborhood transforms into a living altar, where color, music and remembrance meet in the streets.

This year’s event, organized by All For Logan with support from the Barrio Logan Association, welcomed thousands of families and friends for a day filled with folklórico dancers, processions from Oaxaca, and the steady rhythm of drums guiding the community through celebration and reflection. From the first blessing at noon to the final procession at sundown, every moment radiated joy and connection.

Partners Make it Possible

Uptown 11 was proud to represent the Barrio Logan Association in its partnerships with San Diego Foundation, San Diego Community Power, San Diego State University, and other organizations that helped make this year’s event possible.

Together, their support ensured that this community celebration continues to thrive — uplifting local artists, families and the culture of Barrio Logan.

Two Lenses, One Story

Our photographer, Sam Hodgson, took a classic photojournalistic approach to the day, while Checka Sardina, a local photographer, DJ, and member of 619 Gurlz took film portraits all along Logan Avenue. Her work, developed at Safelight Labs and published alongside her reflections in the Developing Stories blog, reveals an intimacy and trust borne from her deep roots in the neighborhood.

Checka’s images offer unparalleled depth — framing and uplifting the people, embraces and moments that make this celebration uniquely Barrio Logan.
